There can be several reasons why Computers run slow. Here are a few reasons and how to fix them:
Hard Disk space filled
Hard Disk should have atleast 200 to 300 MB of free space for temporary files.
Background Programs
Remove or disable any TSRs or programs that automatically start each time the computer boots. To see what programs are running in the background, how much memory they're using, and their CPU usage open Task Manager. An anti-virus scanner on the computer, spyware protection program, or other security utility often begin to scan the computer and it can decrease the overall performance of your computer.
Computer or processor is overheating
Make sure your computer and processor is not overheating, excessive heat can cause a significant decrease in computer performance.
If any of the above solutions don't work out try to reinstall the Operating System and if the problem still persists it can be a serious hardware problem. May be CPU, RAM or Motherboard.

CR Computer

great post and before you reinstall the os just check to see if the computer needs a defrag some people never defrag a computer which causes the harddrive to have to spend more time searching for what you are wanting to open.
